PostHeaderIcon 10 secrets of the Nokia N900

freebiejeebies1. It makes free calls
Want to call the special someone abroad? Avoid roaming charges by dialling them up over Skype on your Nokia N900. If they’re using Skype on the other end too, be it on a PC or mobile, it’ll be completely free. Handy.

2. It updates when you’re not looking
Maemo 5 is a sturdy operating system, but Nokia is making it better all the time, and will release regular updates. You won’t need to muck around with any cables though: they’ll be released over the air, so you can just allow it to install as you sleep.

3. It’ll make you into a picture editor
The 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics on the Nokia N900 is pretty solid, but you can make even more of your snaps by tweaking them afterwards. Zoom in, crop, rip out the red eye, geotag – it’s all available with one finger prod, and when you’re done, you can upload them up on Ovi and Flickr over 3G in seconds.

4. It’s a hacker’s delight
No iPhone OS-style lockdowns here: Maemo 5 on the Nokia N900 is a hacker’s dream come true. It’s based on Linux, so many developers won’t struggle to adapt, and you can craft all sorts of widgety wonders to slap on the homescreen.

5. It plays videos in the browser
YouTube’s been knocking around on mobiles for years, but only in full-window mode. The Nokia N900’s desktop-like internet browser plays YouTube and other Flash videos in a webpage itself, so you can leave them playing while looking around the rest of the site.

6. It multitasks with live views
Pull up the multitasking pane by tapping the top left icon on the Nokia N900’s screen and you’ll be presented with a grid of all open apps and internet tabs. Here’s the thing: these cards aren’t just screenshots, they’re live view of what’s happening in that app. You can even see web animations on pages rolling along merrily.

7. It’ll remember all your desktop browsing
One of the first apps for the Nokia N900 you’ll want to check out is Firefox mobile. Download a plug-in for it and if you use Firefox on a desktop computer too, it can sync your history so your Nokia N900 will remember the sites you’ve been visiting on your PC, and add them to the auto-suggestion list, blurring the boundaries between desktop and mobile browsing.

8. It’ll be the ultimate DJ
As you’d expect of a smartphone, the Nokia N900 can download podcasts for you automatically. But Maemo 5’s media player also features internet radio as one of the core options alongside music and video, so you can set presets and tune in wherever there’s Wi-Fi or reception, even if the station is on the other side of the globe.

9. It’ll keep you indoors
The Nokia N900 comes with a TV out connection, so you can plug it in and check it out on a flatscreen. That’s great if you want to play games emulators on a larger display, but it also means you can stream internet video to your TV without the need for an HTPC or games console.

10. It eats apps for breakfast
The Nokia N900’s QWERTY clicky keyboard isn’t the only snappy thing about it: the 600MHz processor ticking away under the bonnet means it’s incredibly fast, and can handle monstrous amount of apps open at the same time without dinting performance. We’ve pushed it up to 20 and counting!
